The challenge for UX designers is no longer just creating intuitive layouts—it’s about designing AI-driven experiences that feel intelligent, trustworthy, and user-centric.

My work at Serta provided an early glimpse into this shift. We implemented a system where, depending on analytics data, the page dynamically adjusted based on specific parameters coded into the site. This approach created an adaptive UX, tailoring content and recommendations to user behavior. That same mindset is critical when designing for generative AI today—anticipating user needs, offering personalized experiences, and ensuring that AI-generated outputs enhance rather than hinder usability.

Key Considerations in Generative AI UX Design

1. User Control & Transparency

Generative AI introduces unpredictability. Users need to understand how AI-generated content is created and how much influence they have over it. My experience at Serta reinforced the importance of setting clear rules for when and how AI-driven content should change.

Design Best Practices:

Implement clear affordances for users to refine AI-generated content.

Offer explanations on AI decisions through tooltips or visual cues.

Allow users to set preferences or define constraints before generation.

2. Error Handling & AI Limitations

AI doesn’t always get it right. Just as our Serta implementation had guardrails to prevent misleading content from appearing based on bad data, generative AI experiences need mechanisms for users to correct or override AI-generated mistakes.

Design Best Practices:

Provide “undo” and “edit” functionalities for AI-generated outputs.

Offer alternative suggestions when AI results seem off.

Encourage feedback loops where users can refine or correct AI behavior over time.

3. Personalization vs. User Expectations

At Serta, we leveraged real-time analytics to adjust product recommendations and content. However, one key lesson was that over-personalization can sometimes alienate users. In generative AI experiences, personalization should feel helpful rather than intrusive.

Design Best Practices:

Let users adjust the level of personalization to which AI applies.

Offer opt-in or opt-out features for tailored recommendations.

Communicate when AI is adapting based on user behavior.

4. Building Trust in AI

When designing the adaptive Serta page, we ensured that changes were subtle and based on precise, pre-set rules. This transparency is critical in generative AI—users must feel confident in AI-generated outputs.

Design Best Practices:

Use confidence indicators (e.g., “AI is 85% sure”) to manage user expectations.

Clearly distinguish AI-generated content from human-created content.

Disclose AI’s data sources and update cycles where applicable.

5. Conversational & Multimodal Experiences

Conversational or multimodal interactions often power generative AI. While my work at Serta focused on dynamically adjusting web pages, the same principles apply to AI-driven chatbots and content generation tools—designing for seamless, natural interaction is key.

Design Best Practices:

Use concise, natural language in AI prompts and responses.

Design fallback options for when AI misinterprets user input.

Support multimodal inputs, such as combining voice and visual elements.

Future of UX in Generative AI

My experience at Serta was an early example of AI-driven UX adaptation, but the future holds even more potential. As generative AI continues to evolve, UX designers must rethink their approach—no longer just designing screens but orchestrating dynamic, intelligent experiences that adapt in real-time.

The best AI-powered designs will empower users, not replace them. By prioritizing transparency, control, and adaptability, UX professionals can shape the next generation of human-AI interaction in ways that are not just functional but truly transformative.

Final Thoughts

Designing for generative AI isn’t just about new UI elements—it’s about reimagining the relationship between humans and machines. Whether through web personalization as we did at Serta or through real-time AI-driven content creation, the future of UX is dynamic, adaptive, and intelligent.

Introduction Generative AI transforms digital experiences, shifting UX design from static interfaces to dynamic, personalized systems that adapt in real-time.
