For the past two years, the technology industry has talked endlessly about AI agents. In 2025, the expectation was clear: agents would transform software. The reality was less dramatic. Most “agents” released in that period were little more than upgraded chatbots with a few automation hooks.

Meanwhile, something else captured the spotlight. Generative AI images and video exploded. Tools for visual generation improved so quickly that they dominated headlines, creative workflows, and venture funding.

But beneath that noise, something more consequential has been forming.

2026 looks increasingly like the year AI agents actually begin to deliver.

From Tools to Teammates

To understand the shift, we need to separate three different phases of AI.

Traditional AI analyzed data and produced predictions.

Generative AI produced content when prompted.

Agentic AI is different. It acts.

The UX Shift: From Conversational UI to Delegative UI

The most profound impact of agentic AI may not be technological.

It may be experiential.

For decades, software design assumed that users perform actions themselves. They click buttons, fill forms, and navigate interfaces.

Generative AI introduced conversational interfaces where users ask questions and receive answers.

Agentic systems introduce something entirely different.

Delegation.

Instead of asking software how to do something, users assign the goal.

Agentic systems introduce entirely new UX problems.

If software acts autonomously, users must understand what it is doing.

Designers now have to answer questions like:

How do you show what actions the agent took?
How do you intervene when something goes wrong?

Researchers increasingly emphasize human-in-the-loop systems, where agents execute tasks but humans maintain oversight and control.

Without that layer of transparency, autonomous software quickly becomes untrustworthy.

The Real Risk: Automation Without Strategy

Despite the excitement, the industry is still in an early stage.

Many organizations are deploying agents without redesigning the workflows around them. That approach rarely succeeds.

Experts increasingly argue that the companies that win will not be those with the smartest agents, but those that re-architect their processes around agent-driven execution.

Simply adding an agent to a broken workflow produces a faster broken workflow.
