Daniel Suarez described our current moment in 2006. We are finally living inside the book. The only problem is that nobody designed the user experience for when the fiction became real.
In 2006, a former systems analyst writing under a pseudonym self-published a novel about a dead genius whose software program continued operating after his death, reading the world through networked cameras, rewarding loyalty with AR overlays, dispatching autonomous vehicles, and building an alternative economy one encrypted transaction at a time.
The book was called Daemon. The author was Daniel Suarez. And for anyone working in UX right now, rereading it is one of the most disorienting experiences available, because almost everything Suarez described as fiction twenty years ago is now infrastructure.
We are living inside the book. The UX of that reality is still a mess.
What the Daemon Actually Described
Daemon, published in 2006, anticipated the rise of AI-powered social media manipulation, cryptocurrencies, augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, and much more. Those are the bullet points. The deeper achievement of the novel lies in Suarez’s understanding of the relationship between humans and the systems that mediate their experience of reality.
The Daemon in the novel does not operate through a screen. It operates through the world: through cameras embedded in the environment, through AR overlays delivered to heads-up display glasses worn by participants, through location-aware triggers that fire when a specific person stands in a specific place, through a distributed network of agents who see the system’s instructions layered directly onto physical reality. The Daemon’s interface is the world itself, annotated, contextual, ambient, and responsive to presence rather than to deliberate input.
That is not science fiction anymore. That is the product roadmap of Meta, Google, Apple, Samsung, and every spatial computing platform currently shipping or in development.
Daemon covers concepts from distributed networks and MMORPGs to automated vehicles and augmented reality via head-mounted visual overlays. Suarez paints a world where people increasingly rely on technology they do not understand. That last clause is the one worth sitting with. The technology Suarez described in 2006 has arrived in 2026 as Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Android XR devices, and AI agents that observe the physical environment and surface contextual information in real time. And the people using these devices, like the people in the novel, are interacting with systems they do not fully understand through interfaces that were not designed with the humility that such not-understanding requires.
Where Meta Glasses Are Right Now
Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses have become one of the most visible attempts to make wearable tech feel normal: familiar frames, built-in cameras, open-ear audio, voice controls, and Meta AI packed into eyewear that does not look like a prototype. In 2025, they sit in an interesting middle ground: not full augmented-reality glasses with a display, but far more practical than many earlier smart glasses that struggled with style, comfort, or everyday usefulness.
The current generation is honest about what it is and what it is not. If you expect Iron Man-style visuals or heads-up notifications, this generation will feel more like connected eyewear than futuristic spatial computing. Everyday wearability also depends on context. In casual settings, the glasses feel natural: taking a quick photo at a café, recording a short POV clip on a bike ride, listening to a podcast while walking, or asking Meta AI about something you are looking at. In more private environments, such as offices, classrooms, gyms, or dinner tables, the camera hardware can make people uneasy even when you are not recording. The social etiquette around face-worn cameras is still evolving.
That gap between what the device is capable of and what the social context permits is the UX problem nobody on the spec sheet can solve. The Daemon understood this in its own fictional terms: the AR overlay system in the novel required participants to buy into the system’s reality. Users who did not understand the overlay saw the world as it was. Users inside the system saw the world as it was annotated. The dissonance between those two experiences of the same physical space, depending on what you were wearing, is exactly the dissonance that Meta glasses users and bystanders are navigating right now, without any established social grammar to draw on.
The upcoming Gen 3 glasses aim to include super-sensing technology that enables real-time recognition of objects, locations, and even people. This feature could improve contextual awareness and provide users with actionable insights in various scenarios. When that capability ships, the gap between the Daemon’s fictional AR layer and the consumer product in your hands will be, for practical purposes, closed. The glasses will see what you see. They will know where you are and who is near you. They will surface information about your environment before you ask for it. The Daemon described this as a feature of a dystopian thriller. We are describing it as a 2027 product roadmap item.
What Every UX Boom Got Wrong About the Transition
Every paradigm shift in UX history has produced a transition period in which capability outpaced the design discipline, leaving users to navigate systems more powerful than the experience design around them acknowledged.
The GUI era produced computers that could do more than the interface made legible, and users spent years in a state of partial understanding, doing things that worked without knowing why, and avoiding things that seemed not to work without knowing what they were actually missing.
The mobile era produced context-aware devices long before the apps running on them behaved as though context existed. The phone knew where you were, what time it was, what you had recently searched for, and who you were with. The apps largely ignored it all and presented the same interface regardless. The gap between what the device knew and what the experience used was a design failure that lasted years.
The conversational UI era produced voice assistants that could parse language before they could understand intent, and users spent years in the gap between what the device heard and what it comprehended, developing workarounds and behavioral adaptations that were a direct consequence of an experience design that had not caught up to its own capability.
We are in a Darwinian struggle with narrow AI. The proposed solution is to build a new internet hardwired with democratic values, using augmented reality tools to identify bots in the physical world and to create a symbiotic relationship with AI. Suarez described this in 2008 as the challenge of the coming era. In 2026, it is the challenge of the current one, and the design discipline that should be guiding how humans navigate the ambient AI layer overlaid on their physical world is still running to catch up with hardware that shipped before the experience design was ready for it.
The Three UX Gaps That Define the Daemon-to-Reality Transition
Gap 01: The gap between ambient capability and social legibility
Key challenges in the current smart glasses market include dependence on a phone for cloud AI, narrow fields of view, limited battery life, and public privacy concerns about always-on cameras. The privacy concern is the social legibility problem in its most visible form. A device that is always observing the physical environment is a device that changes the social contract of every space it enters, and the current design response to this, a small capture LED that lights when the camera is active, is not adequate to the scale of the social renegotiation the technology requires.
The Daemon solved this narratively by having the system operate within a community that had opted into its terms. The real-world version has no such community boundary. The glasses go to the grocery store, the doctor’s office, the school pickup line, and the workplace, each of which has different social norms, different privacy expectations, and different comfort levels with ambient observation. Designing the social UX of a wearable that is always on in spaces that were not designed for it is not a product feature. It is a cultural design problem that the field has yet to address with a methodology.
Gap 02: The gap between AI contextual awareness and user mental models
The Daemon’s AR layer in the novel was comprehensible to its users because the system’s rules were legible: perform this action, receive this reward, see this information. The overlay made sense because the underlying logic was designed to be understood by the people within it.
Current Meta AI integration in smart glasses operates on a different principle. The AI observes, infers, and responds, but the logic of its inferences is not transparent to the user. Software polish often moves user acceptance faster than hardware alone. Smooth UX matters most. You will notice better apps before you notice better glasses. The UX of the AI layer- whether the user understands what the AI is doing with what it sees, why it surfaced a specific piece of information, and how to correct it when it gets the inference wrong- is where the current product generation is most visibly behind the fiction that described it.
Gap 03: The gap between the individual experience and the shared space
The Daemon’s most prescient design insight was that AR systems do not just create an individual experience. They create a layer of reality between the user and everyone around them, and people not wearing the device are part of a social environment fundamentally altered by the presence of someone wearing one.
Challenges like privacy and accessibility persist, and overcoming these barriers will require transparency in data policies, sleek, comfortable designs, and features that deliver genuine everyday value, ensuring that AR glasses become both trusted and essential tools for modern life. Trust is the operative word. The design of trust in a shared physical space where some people wear ambient AI devices, and others do not, is a problem that no current framework adequately addresses. It requires thinking about the experience of everyone in the space, not just the person wearing the device, which is a design scope the field has never had to manage before.
The Closing That Should Put the Book Back in Your Hands
Here is what I would ask every UX designer working on spatial computing, AR, or ambient AI systems to do before their next design session.
Read the Daemon.
Not for the plot, which is excellent, but for the design thinking. Suarez spent nearly two decades as a systems analyst before he wrote the book, and the scenarios he describes are not wish fulfillment. They are the logical extension of systems that existed in 2006, followed to their practical consequences with the kind of rigor that most UX futurism skips in favor of aesthetic speculation.
The questions the Daemon raises about who controls the overlay layer, who is legible to whom in an AR-annotated world, how trust is built and broken in systems that operate through ambient observation rather than explicit consent, how users develop mental models of AI that acts on their behalf without explaining itself: these are the design questions of 2026 and 2027, asked and partially answered in a novel published twenty years ago by someone who understood that the technology was not the hard part.
The hard part was always the human experience of it. The hard part was always design.
Unlike the fable of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, there is no Master Sorcerer ready to return to break the spell and save us from our imperfect creations. We had better succeed. Suarez wrote that in 2008 about the relationship between humans and AI systems. In 2026, with ambient AI in glasses on people’s faces in every public space, the observation is no longer a warning. It is a current-state assessment. The design discipline that shapes how humans experience this transition is the discipline this moment is calling for.
The Daemon described the world we are building. Now we have to design the human experience of living inside it.
That is the brief. The clock is running.
